Holiday celebrations can be ruined by pet accidents. While stirring up some holiday cheer make sure you think about the safety of your pet. Our Brantford veterinarian at Beattie Animal Hospital wants to remind pet owners that the holidays can bring hazards for their furry friends. Hazards for pets include bones, electrical cords, ornaments, holiday plants and stress.Animal Hospital Guides Pet Owners About Holiday Accident Prevention
Small bones from the holiday turkey or ham can get lodged into your animal’s throat, stomach and intestinal tract. Pet owners should not attempt to give their dogs bones from their holiday feast. Steak bones pose a hazard as well.
Electrical cords can be a choking hazard for pets and young children. Puppies and kittens will chew on electrical cords, which put them in danger of electrocution. It is best for the cords to be hidden or covered in order to protect your pet from harm.
Ornaments can be very dangerous for pets, too. Sharp, breakable ornaments can cut your pet or cause damage if ingested. Tinsel and ribbons pose a danger as well; they can be choking hazards or get tangled around the stomach and intestines if swallowed.
Holiday plants, although beautiful and festive, can be deadly to your pets. Holly and mistletoe are extremely poisonous when eaten. Poinsettia’s are not deadly but can cause stomach problems if licked or eaten. The best approach is to keep all plants out of reach.
The holidays can be stressful for pets. A house full of strangers and guests can get your pet excited and scared. Pets may try to escape out of open doors and run away. Keep your pets inside and try to give them a nice quiet space of their own for them to relax and stay calm.
At our Brantford veterinary clinic, our 24-hour vet can care for your pet if there is an accident during the holiday season. Our veterinary staff at Beattie Animal Hospital is certified to provide quality care for your pets, including dentistry, pet grooming, pet boarding and surgery on dogs and other animals when necessary. Bring your animals to our 24-hour vet and get them the care they deserve.
